Charles Ruby motions for a truck to continue backing toward Jacob?s Ladder Antique Mall to load chunks of concrete this morning on the west side of the square in front of the Elks Lodge building. Sometime in the night of July 2, a 6-inch iron pipe off the city main into the Elks building burst underground. In the morning of July 3, a passerby reported water bubbling up out of the sidewalk. The city shut off the valve stopping the flow of water, but 6 feet of water had already collected in the basement of the building under Haute Haus and Jacob?s Ladder with a much lesser amount in the Walker building. Dirt and sand came in with the water and is currently being bucketed out by the 5 gallon buckets full. Before repairs can be made, both the street and sidewalk have to be broken up and removed for access to the pipe.
