Sigourney resident Lucy Gamon has been appointed by Iowa Governor Chet Culver to be a district judge in Iowa?s Eighth Judicial District, which includes Washington County. Gamon has been an associate judge in the Eighth District since 1993, and is the daughter of Harold and Julia Gamon of Washington. The vacancy was created when District Judge E. Richard Meadows retired after 12 years of service.
Gamon said she found out about the appointment Friday afternoon when she answered simultaneous phone calls from Judge James Blomgren, the chief judge of the Eighth District, and from Jim Larew, the governor?s chief of staff.
?They called me at the exact same time to congratulate me,? said Gamon. ?I was talking to one of them on my desk phone and one of them on my cell phone at the same time. It was a very exciting moment and I was absolutely thrilled to get the news.?
Gamon said the new position entails a heavy caseload. Her legal jurisdiction will now expand to include felonies and all civil cases, including dissolutions, which end an agreement or contract such as a marriage.
?I have very much enjoyed being a district associate judge for the last 17 years and am looking forward to a smooth transition to the district court bench,? remarked Gamon.
