Math professor Cathy Gorini, dean of faculty at Maharishi University of Management, has published a book on probability that?s part of the 14-book Master Math series put out by Cengage.
The book is oriented toward advanced high school students, college students or someone wanting to learn about probability on his or her own. It covers topics such as random variables, distributions and permutations and combinations.
?I had a lot of fun writing it,? Gorini said. ?It?s very evolutionary to write a book because it involves thinking deeply about how to organize knowledge and thinking how someone would learn.?
Gorini said she used teaching principles developed by Maharishi, such as starting with wholeness and moving from concrete to abstract.
The book also includes lots of practical applications of probability. The final chapter shows how probability comes from set theory.
This is Gorini?s third book, with her previous being a geometry reference book. She had expressed an interest in doing another book, and her agent sent her a list of possibilities. Gorini chose probability, a course that she has taught many times at M.U.M.
