Barricades blocking traffic from going south on Grand Avenue at its intersection with East Washington Street aren?t going anywhere.
A couple of merchants asked the Mt. Pleasant City Council during its Aug. 10 meeting to consider re-opening the intersection. The merchants claimed that the length of closure (since mid-May) of the intersection had adversely impacted their business.
However, the council, during its regular meeting last night, was united in keeping the intersection closed until the Washington Street project is completed (scheduled for early November).
?I agree it should remain closed because of safety issues,? said Councilman Stan Curtis. ?It also would delay and add to the cost of the project.?
Councilman Matt Crull concurred. ?All the businesses knew it was coming. We all have to suffer a little bit, but when it is done, it will be a great thing.?
