Halcyon House holds Barbie party

WASHINGTON — Halcyon House decorated a room in pink, set up a flamboyant photo booth and threw a “Barbie Party,” last month, the latest iteration of WesleyLife’s “Pursue Your Joy” motto for the year.

Halcyon House Wellness Director Becky Carter said another staff member had a collection of the Mattel dolls with over 500 items, all of them on display for the event.

“It went really well, I think the residents really enjoyed it,” Carter said. “And it was really exciting to see (the employee) share her passion, her joy with us.”

Carter said the celebration was pitched largely due to the cultural zeitgeist that is the Barbie Movie, which broke records this summer as the most popular movie of the year and highest-grossing ever from Warner Bros. Entertainment, bringing in a worldwide total of $1.38 billion at the box office.

The fact that a staff member happened to have an extensive collection of the toys was pure coincidence, according to Carter.

“When I went to her, I was shocked when she said she had over 500,” Carter said.
