Congrats to everyone who participated in the 600 Club in 2019! Everyone did a great job of working toward the goal of exercising 150 minutes per week. Combined, the participants worked out more than 313,000 minutes in 2019! Halcyon House residents are looking forward to the next fitness incentive challenge, exercising/traveling the Great River Road.
What do you do on a cold and snowy day? Well, at 'Artist with ‘HeArt'” in the households, we painted a snowman on canvas. Everyone had their own interpretation on what their snowman should look like. The women had a good time painting and found this activity to be very relaxing. Next month we will be doing Barn Quilts on Canvas. When everyone is finished painting, their masterpieces will be hung up in each household (inside entryway) for everyone to see.
At Trivia on Jan. 20 it was 'Martin Luther King Day.” Martin Luther King was born on Jan. 15 as Michael King. His dad later renamed him after Martin Luther, the monk who started the Protestant Reformation in 1517. M.L.K. went to college at age 15 and became a minister at 19. He had his doctorate degree at 25 and won a Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 35. King was killed by a single bullet fired on April 4, 1968. He was 36 when he died. His last words were to musician Ben Branch: 'Ben, make sure you play ‘Take My Hand, Precious Lord' in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty.”
The fireplace at Lending Hands blazed almost continuously during the recent two weeks of cold winter weather, keeping the participants warm and dry as they enjoyed various events including bingo, cards, and stories read by Sherry Sieren. The participants learned more about the life of Hank Williams. Peg Buffington played piano, and Carol Greiner brought catalogs filled with photos of plants and flowers for the participants to cut out. Individual fruit salads were made by each individual during cooking class and eaten as the afternoon's refreshments. Paper planes were folded and tossed. During Friendship Club the Lending Hands participants shared stories and memories of the past.
Happy Birthday wishes this week go out to Jan Rosien, Mary Ellen Wright, Clyde Cornelius, and Millie Guy.
