Chapel worship on Sunday, August 21 was led by Josh Doorenbos, Pastor of Youth and Music at Faith Baptist Church. The scripture was Romans 14:7-9, 8:28-30 and the message was titled “My Only Comfort”. Virginia Tschantz provided piano music. On August 28, Scott Johnson from the Bethel Mennonite Church led worship using scripture from 2 John on the topic of “Truth”, with music assisted by pianist Dorothy Koehler.
Events in the Arborwood household included an afternoon of looking at old greeting cards from the 1930s through the 1950s, singing with Mary Jo, a “Finish the Lyrics” game while seated outdoors in the courtyard, and making bags of Bear Lake Trail Mix while listening to camp trivia. Various types of movement activities were offered on weekday mornings including chair exercise, balloon tennis, ball toss, and parachute balloon toss. This was followed by a reading of the Daily Chronicle, which publishes reports of notable events that occurred on the same date in previous years. This was followed by coffee and conversation that included mind-challenging trivia or word games.
Rosewood residents enjoyed time on the outdoors patio as they relaxed in the sun. Several were impressed by the growth of the field corn they planted in the spring as one of the stalks bears the unusual sum of three healthy ears of corn, a rare sight, even in the prolific fields of Iowa corn!
Chewy, one of Sagewood’s canine friends, came to visit on Waggin’ Wednesday. Sagewood hosted well-attended Bingo games the last two Wednesdays bringing together residents from several households.
On August 18, a puzzle, trivia, photos and reminiscing were shared by the residents of Wedgewood and Sagewood in a local mini-version of the Iowa State Fair. Refreshments included funnel cakes with cherries or powdered sugar, fried green tomatoes, and lemon shake-ups. Instead of painting with brushes during “Artist With HeArt”, residents used broccoli tops to create images of colorful autumn trees. Wedgewood’s garden continues to provide residents with an abundance of tomatoes for meals and snacks. On August 25th, Wedgewood residents remembered the movie “The Wizard of Oz”, which was nationally released on August 25,1939. The event included behind-the-scenes trivia and the singing of “Follow the Yellow Brick Road." They ate mini corn dogs, pretzel bites with cheese and lemonade provided by Circa 59. The Monday “Joggin’ Your Noggin" topic was Johnny Appleseed and the healthy benefits of eating an apple. An apple word search and the coloring of an apple on an adult coloring page were offered as a part of the program, and they sang "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree."
Independent Living residents had an opportunity to try Line Dancing when community members and residents gathered in the Morrison Center for an energetic class. Later on in the week, residents took a trip to the Coralville Marina and cruised on a pontoon for a couple hours enjoying the sunshine and the cool breeze, followed by a picnic lunch.
On Friday, August 15, Halcyon team members participated in a push-up challenge for National Wellness Month. Whether they were completed on the floor or against a wall, team members were asked to see how many push-ups they could complete in 60 seconds. The housekeeping team exceeded expectations, and one team member pushed his endurance to three minutes.
Team members wore Hawaiian shirts, sun hats, florals and bright colors on August 26 for a beach-themed day. They were invited to visit the Tiki Bar for root beer or sherbet and Sprite floats.
September birthday wishes are offered to the following residents: Maxine Peiffer (who will be 100 years old on September 1), Marian McQuaid, Connie Atwood, Margaret Quigley, Glenys Clark, Gene Wallerich, Terry Gent, Margaret Dunn.
