It?s out with the old and in with the new for some Henry County Conservation signage.
During Monday night?s Henry County Conservation board meeting, the board approved the purchasing of 10 new highway road signs that will be posted around Henry County.
?All of our highway signs, all 10 of them, are looking pretty horrible,? said Henry County Conservation director, John Pullis. ?They have faded in the sun and just need to be replaced.?
In addition to the signs? faded look, Pullis and board member Jim Onorato also commented that some of the signs are outdated and have incorrect wording on them.
?Some of the signs still say ?Oakland Mills State Park,?? commented Onorato.
Along with purchasing new highway signs, Pullis also got the approval from the board to purchase several more park boundary signs, public hunting signs and shelter house reservation signs. The cost of replacing all 10 signs, plus the purchasing of the additional signage will total roughly $2,000, according to Pullis. The county will do the installation.
With the board?s approval to purchase new signage, the board turned their attention to discussion of the Woodland Disc Golf Course baskets. After a recent purchase of new baskets for the course, Pullis says the Henry County Conservation Department is on the hunt for disc blades to stabilize the bases of the new baskets.
?These new baskets do need used disc blades that can be welded onto the bases of baskets to stabilize them,? said Pullis. ?We?ve checked with a number of farmers and scrap yards and still need about 19 of them.?
Several board members said they would check with their various friends and neighbors for used blades that would work for the baskets.
Finally, Henry County Naturalists Trenton Hoekstra and Cari Nicely reported that the department?s day camps are now completed for the summer, while also adding that many of the department?s summer activities are beginning to wind down.
?Our day camps, overall, were a success. Some of the camps were full, while others were not totally full,? said Nicely. ?For our overnight activities, we heard from several kids who loved the experience. We had some kids who had never slept outside in a tent before and another that had never gotten to fish before, so that kind of feedback from the kids that come to our activities is really great.?
The next regular board meeting of the Henry County Conservation board will be held on Monday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m.
