MT. PLEASANT - Henry County Conservation is calling all nature lovers and photographers to Oakland Mills Nature Center on Aug. 13 to kick off the department's third annual photography contest.
During the meeting, assistant naturalist Danika Cox will review rules and regulations for the contest, which will run through Sept. 25.
'We're going to have everyone show up. It can be a little overwhelming if they haven't done it with us before, so we want everyone to be on the same page,” Cox said.
The contest is another opportunity to get people outside and involved with nature, a goal of the department, Cox said.
In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the photography contest is a great activity for those looking for something to do because it allows people to enjoy the outdoors while avoiding large groups.
'Right now, with social distancing, it's a great time to get outside with a camera. You don't have to worry about all of those things,” Cox said.
Henry County Conservation is encouraging anyone of any age and any skill level to participate.
'We've had a youth win the entire contest one year and another year, an adult won. It really varies. We also do a public polling on our social media as well so you never really know,” she said. Competitors can compete in four different categories: landscape, plants, wildlife and people in nature.
With the contest, Cox hopes more Henry County residents are inspired to explore nature and slow down to appreciate its beauty.
'Speaking with people who have done this, to get good shots, you really have to sit and wait for that good opportunity,” she said.
In photographing wildlife specifically, the assistant naturalist said participants will get an opportunity to really observe animals in their natural habitat.
'We hope people enjoy being out there in some of these unique situations and places. A lot of the time, it's go, go, go and hustle and bustle. This will give a photographer a chance to wait for that shot and enjoy everything all at once,” she added.
Last year, the contest had six submissions, but with more advertising and engagement on the department's social media page, Cox is anticipating more participation from the community.
Contest winners will receive free camping certificates. The grand prize winner will get a free cabin stay.
The contest meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Oakland Mills Nature Center. Those who cannot attend are encouraged to speak to assistant naturalist Danika Cox by calling the department's office at 319-986-5067.
