Henry County Public Health to hold free events for seniors

MT. PLEASANT- Henry County Health will be providing programs for seniors throughout the season. All programs are free, and designed to keep folks moving during the traditionally sedentary winter.

Stepping On

A weekly program about fall prevention will begin on Jan. 13, 1-3 p.m., meeting once a week for 7 weeks. Meeting at the Henry County Health Center, Henry County Health literature purports the lessons taught can reduce falls by up to 31%. The class is currently full, but Nurse Megan Francy, who runs the program, is always accepting the names of those who’d wish to join. She hopes that, with enough interest, a second course can be opened.

Walk With Ease

A 6-week program for those who wish to stay active in the cold winter months, Walk With Ease provides an indoor venue for exercise. Physical exercise is crucial toward maintaining good health and independence in older age. Beginning Jan. 19, the class meets at the Mt. Pleasant Rec Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 12:30-1:30 p.m., and is open to anyone who can stand unassisted for 10 minutes at a time without increased pain. Ask A Nurse

In monthly, informal sessions, the public can ask a Registered Nurse medical questions, in what Henry County Health literature calls “a relaxed, supportive environment.” Each month, health education on a specific topic is covered, questions are answered by a Registered Nurse, and free blood pressure screenings are held. This month’s meeting is at 1 p.m. on Dec. 23, at the Crew Public Library in Salem.
