Henry County unemployment drops under 4 percent, close to state average

Henry County unemployment nearly mirrors the statewide figure, according to Iowa Workforce Development statistics released Wednesday.
County unemployment was listed at 3.9 percent in April, the first month in several years that the county jobless rate dropped under 4 percent. The April percentage was a drop by two-tenths of a percentage point from March. Meanwhile, unemployment in Iowa was listed at 3.8 percent, down from 4 percent in March.
All but one area county experienced a drop in unemployment in April. Keokuk County had the biggest decrease at 1.4 percent.
Following are the latest jobless figures for area counties, multi-county micropolitan areas and cities (March figure followed by April rate).
Counties ? Appanoose, 5.5, 4.8; Davis, 4.8, 4.1; Des Moines, 4.6, 4.3; Jefferson, 4.1, 3.8; Johnson, 2.6, 2.4; Keokuk, 4.8, 3.4; Lee, 5.7, 5.7; Louisa, 4.3, 3.5; Mahaska, 4.5, 3.7; Muscatine, 4.4, 3.8; Van Buren, 4.1, 3.6; Wapello, 5.2, 4.8; Washington, 3.7, 3.0.
Multi-county micropolitan areas ? Burlington, 4.8, 4.2; Ft. Madison-Keokuk, 6.1, 6.0; Ottumwa, 5.1, 4.7.
Cities ? Burlington, 4.8, 4.6; Ottumwa, 5.2, 5.0.
National unemployment was 5.4 percent in April, down from 5.5 percent in March.
