More than 50 percent of Washington, Henry and Jefferson county residents have responded to the census.
As of Aug. 13, 69 percent of Iowans have self-responded to the 2020 census. In the area, 71.5 percent of Henry County, 69.9 percent Washington County and 66 percent of Jefferson county residents have responded.
Though forms are sent by mail, a majority of the responses in the area have been done online.
Residents have until Sept. 20 to self respond.
The census takes place every 10 years. It is important to help communities get a fair share in federal funding for schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other programs, according to the Census Bureau.
COVID-19 has caused challenges for the census response rate.
Usually census takers are sent to visit households that have not yet responded. Instead, this year the Census Bureau will follow up with non-responding households by phone, mailing an additional paper questionnaire and sending emails.
By Dec. 31, the apportionment counts will be delivered to President Donald Trump.
