WINFIELD ? In a special session meeting the Winfield City Council awarded a contract to a garbage provider, approved a sewer bill and discussed a burning ban. Mayor Jeff Suter presided over the Oct. 3 meeting at City Hall.
The City of Winfield found itself in a pickle when it received a letter Sept. 12 from Whaley Waste Systems, the garbage provider at the time, saying it planned to permanently close its doors Oct. 8. The city council held a regular session meeting the evening of Sept. 12, where council members discussed the predicament.
The city council then decided to open the city?s garbage collection to bidders and to hold a special session meeting prior to the final day of Whaley?s operations, so as to avoid a lapse of garbage collection.
Winfield received three bids for garbage collection; the bids came from WEMIGA Waste, Waste Management and Hewitt Excavating and Sanitary Disposal. Each company that submitted a bid had a representative at the special meeting.
WEMIGA Waste submitted a five-year bid of $12.10 per household per month with an increase every two years.
Waste Management submitted a five-year bid with two options. The first option was $9.50 per household per month using 33-gallon bags. The second option was $10.50 per household per month using a 96-gallon cart provided by Waste Management.
Hewitt Excavating and Sanitary Disposal out of Morning Sun submitted a five-year bid of $9.50 for seniors and $10.50 for regulars per household per month.
The contract was awarded to Hewitt Excavating and Sanitary Disposal by a unanimous vote.
In other business, the city council received a bill from Davis Welding for the sewer connection to the new concession stand at the athletic complex. The council approved paying this bill with the stipulation that the concession stand could be used by the city during city sponsored activities.
Also, concerns of citizens burning leaves in town were brought up in regards to health issues. Residents were reminded of the burn site on 130th Street and the council decided to table the issue until the next regular session meeting to allow for more information to be gathered.
