On May 13, the Mt. Pleasant Historical Preservation Commission presented the “2021 Historic Preservation Award” to Dr. Alfred and Debra Savage for their outstanding achievement in the rehabilitation of the historic Mt. Pleasant City Hall, located at 220 W. Monroe Street in Mt. Pleasant.
The building was a Depression-era Works Progess Administration project, completed in 1936. It was constructed as a combination City Hall and fire station, using stone that was salvaged from the Seeley Memorial Y.M.C.A./high school located at 200 N. Jefferson St. that had burned in 1932.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, nominated as an example of revival style public architecture designed and executed during the 1930s. The building served as City Hall for many years until recently when the city needed more space and moved to 307 E. Monroe.
Dr. Alfred and Debra Savage purchased the building in order to preserve it and have rehabilitated it beautifully to its current use as two spacious apartments and numerous office spaces.
