DES MOINES (AP) ? Iowa may have fewer road maps in the future.
The Iowa House voted Tuesday to cut funding for printed state maps, a move that will save about $240,000 in the $351 million state transportation budget. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Scott Raecker, an Urbandale Republican, says the savings are small but significant.
Officials say demand for the maps is declining with a growth in the use of smartphones, navigational units and other GPS technology.
The Iowa Department of Transportation had 1.4 million maps printed at 13 cents apiece in 2012. Due to the cut, it will print about 800,000. Most of the maps go to rest stops.
