WASHINGTON — A total of 589 runners turned out for Washington’s 11th annual Kewash half-marathon Saturday, representing a total of 15 states, and the race’s first participant from Alaska.
YMCA Director Amy Schulte said the weather was fortunately clear the morning of the run, a combination 5K, 10K and half-marathon through downtown Washington and along the historic Kewash Nature Trail.
“The crowds downtown didn't really start to thin out until around 11 a.m. so it was great to see everyone stick around and enjoy the community,” she said in an email. “Our battle of the businesses was a huge hit and we had to increase our limit on the 5K event to support the increased demand for that course.”
Participants were greeted by a series of motivational signs designed by local elementary school classrooms. Schulte said runners could vote for their favorites along the trail, with the winning classroom getting a pizza party.
Saturday also saw Becky Harkema, Shawn Loy and Michelle Driscoll — the race’s founders — running as participants. The trio was also recognized ahead of the starting gun for their role in an event that’s brought thousands of visitors to Washington over the years.
