Chad Thomas of Voice for Injury Prevention demonstrates to Lincoln Elementary School students the way to properly protect their heads with a bicycle helmet, using a real melon to show how it?s done. The program, entitled ?I Got Caught!? educates young Iowans about injury prevention. The program emphasizes safety activities which can prevent a brain or spinal cord injury. In addition to educating students, the ?I Got Caught!? program, with the assistance of local law enforcement agencies, helps to reinforce good habits by ticketing children wearing helmets. The officer rewards the child with a mock citation, sticker and a coupon. Those ticketed also are eligible to enter a drawing for a new bicycle.
