WASHINGTON - The Washington Police Department is helping an Indian Hills Community College student with hands-on law enforcement experience.
Nick Davis has been interning with the Washington police since Feb. 24. He is a Crawfordsville native and attended school in Winfield. His parents are Sarah and Todd Davis.
He is currently attending Indian Hills for criminal justice and before graduating in May he is taking the opportunity to learn aspects of the law enforcement field not taught in school.
Davis said knowing he could help people, especially in or near his hometown, encouraged him to pursue law enforcement.
'it is just a job where at the end of the day you know you did something good to help the community,” he said.
Davis chose to intern with Washington because he rode along with Lt. Shamus Altenhofen last fall and enjoyed the department.
'They are a good group of guys, and I knew I could learn a lot from them,” he said.
While in Washington, he said he a few of the things he is hoping to learn is communicate with people and completing paperwork.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was not able to receive the normal hands-on learning at school, and he said it is nice to learn now. Since being here, he said a few of the most interesting calls have been a domestic violence call and a situation where a person was receiving death threats.
He has worked with all of the officers but has spent the most time working with Lt. Shamus Altenhofen, Sgt. Benjamin Altenhofen and Sgt. Jason Chalupa.
Overall, Davis said it has been good experience so far and with a younger staff, there is opportunities to joke and have fun,
Davis will be with the department through mid to late April.
