Intern Nick Tansey talks about his work at the State Capitol

Intern Spotlight: Meet Nick!
Hello! My name is Nick Tansey and I'm from Mount Pleasant. I’m a junior at Iowa State University studying political science.
I was lucky enough to intern for Joe this semester at the State Capitol, and it has truly been the experience of a lifetime. My time at the Capitol consisted of analyzing legislation and constituent outreach. Both of which have helped me gain a better understanding of the real-world issues Iowans face today.
My interest in government started when I took a government class at Mount Pleasant Community High School with Mr. Batty. In this class, I learned about the U.S. Constitution, the different branches of government, and our very own Iowa State Government. Through this class, and a few political science courses at Iowa State, I felt inclined to ask Joe if there was a way for me to get involved at the state level.
My favorite part of my position would have to be listening to a number of hardworking people from Southeast Iowa about their opinions as well as forming my own opinions on key issues. Another fun experience I had was being able to explore the Capitol building, and being able to climb up into the Capitol dome!
Short Week at the State House
Nick has been such an incredible addition to our team up at the State House, and it's been wonderful getting to know him and his family!
In the legislature this past week, we were only in session for Tuesday and Wednesday. For anyone unfamiliar with the way session progresses, this is typically the first sign that things are starting to wind down. This coming Tuesday will be our 100th day in session, which is when our clerks go back home and things really start coming to a close.
We're still mostly working on budgets, and will hopefully hear the MOMS bill this upcoming week.
Van Buren County Central Committee Meeting
Because we didn't have session on Monday, I was able to be home for the Van Buren County Central Committee meeting this past Monday night. Van Buren is filled with some wonderful patriots who truly care about our community. Thank you to the Committee for having me!
State Rep. Joe Mitchell, R-Mt. Pleasant
