The Washington County Sheriff's office is investigating a report of shots fired from a vehicle in Brighton at a mailbox, the department announced Monday afternoon.
The shots occurred at 1741 Hwy 78 in Brighton at approximately 1:20 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The Iowa State Patrol and law enforcement from Jefferson and Louisa counties assisted in locating the vehicle.
The Sheriff's office executed a search warrant at 608 E 2nd St. at approximately 10:05 p.m., with assistance from the City of Washington Police Department and Iowa Department of Natural Resources. There was also a welfare check at that address earlier in the day.
The Sheriff's office will release more details 'as they become available,” per the news release Monday afternoon. Sean Ellington of the Sheriff's office said Monday morning he could not release details because it's a 'pending investigation.”
City of Washington Chief of Police Jim Lester said he could not provide any details because the police department was only there to assist the Sheriff's office.
