As part of his visits to all 99 counties every year, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig visited Mahaska, Keokuk and Washington Counties on Friday, Feb. 9.
The theme of the day was corn and pork – Iowa leads the nation in the production of both – and Secretary Naig attended a roundtable with pork producers and corn growers in Washington County at the Washington County Extension Office. Prior to that, he toured Hog Slat in Sigourney and Kelderman Manufacturing in Oskaloosa, both of which represent how our farm production helps create economic strength for our communities through supply chains, manufacturing and retail sales.
Secretary Naig was joined by approximately 25 Iowa Corn Growers or Iowa Pork Producers as well as State Representative Heather Hora and State Senator Dawn Driscoll for a discussion about current issues in agriculture.
Secretary Naig talked about foreign animal disease preparedness, Farm Bill discussions, and Choose Iowa, which is the state’s new signature brand for Iowa grown, Iowa raised and Iowa made products. The group also discussed Iowa’s Grain Indemnity Fund and water quality and conservation progress, among other topics.
