Iowa City man sentenced for Riverside drug offense
May. 27, 2022 12:43 pm
WASHINGTON — Mark Poggenpohl, 38, of Iowa City was sentenced to prison for up to 25 years after being found guilty by a jury on May 4, 2022 of Delivery of Methamphetamine, a Class C felony.
Poggenpohl was on parole when he sold methamphetamine to a confidential source at the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort on March 18, 2021. Poggenpohl’s criminal history, which goes back to the mid-1990s, includes more than two felony convictions and two convictions relating to the sale or manufacturing of methamphetamine. Because of those prior convictions, Poggenpohl’s prison sentence, which would have been up to 10 years, was enhanced to 25 years.
“Mark Poggenpohl has a long criminal history, and it includes acts of violence, theft, and property damage,” said Washington County Attorney John Gish. “Over the years, Poggenpohl attempted or completed approximately 30 treatment or rehabilitation programs, has been supervised by probation and parole officers, and has been to prison four times before. The only way the community will be kept safe is if the Iowa Department of Corrections keeps Poggenpohl in prison.”
Poggenpohl is facing charges in Johnson County and where is expected to be sentenced to prison for up to 12 years for those crimes. Poggenpohl’s 25-year prison sentence for Washington County will be consecutive to his Johnson County sentence.
