All drivers need to do it, but many forget. Now, Iowa licensed drivers can receive an email renewal notification approximately 30 days before their driver?s license is set to expire.
All drivers are responsible for renewing their driver?s license on time. The license expires on the expiration date printed on it. The license is valid for driving for an additional 60 days after expiration.
After those 60 days, a person may be ticketed for driving with an expired driver?s license.
Persons that hold a nonoperator?s identification card rather than a driver?s license may also sign up for a free email renewal reminder.
The renewal reminder is not the only new, free service the Iowa Department of Transportation is offering.
? Iowa law requires a person to notify the IDOT of a change in his mailing address within 30 days. A mailing address can now be updated online. This will only change the mailing address the IDOT or county treasurer will use to mail official notices regarding a driver?s license, identification card or vehicle registration. This will not issue a new driver?s license or identification card. To obtain a new card, appear at any Iowa driver?s license station and pay a $1 fee.
? A person can now see any convictions, accidents or sanctions that appear on his driving record.
A valid email account and Internet access is all that?s needed to perform any of these tasks.
