The educators are receiving training this week in the Response to Intervention program. Children undergo literacy screenings at least three times a year under the program. Students who fall below the baseline get more instruction and other support.
The state wants all Iowa students to read at or above grade level by the time they leave third grade.
Iowa education chief Brad Buck told The Des Moines Register that about 25 percent of Iowa fourth-graders scored below proficient on the state reading test in 2012.
Last year the Iowa Education Department director ordered public schools to adopt the program.
