PACIFIC JUNCTION (AP) ? The U.S. Interior Department says a western Iowa Native American site has been designated a national historic landmark.
The site is among 26 new national historic landmarks and one national natural landmark designations announced Wednesday.
The new landmark in Iowa is the Davis Oriole Earthlodge Site, near Pacific Junction in Mills County.
It is considered one of the best-preserved Central Plains tradition house sites in the United States. It dates back to around A.D. 1250, when North American people first successfully incorporated corn and other starchy seed-base agriculture into their hunting-and-gathering way of life.
