Iowa Wesleyan University student awarded bakery scholarship

Zachary Florido of Iowa Wesleyan University was one the four winners of the Bimbo Bakeries College Grant Sweepstakes that was presented on Feb. 15 at IWU.

Florido was awarded a $25,000 grant toward his college expenses. Florido is planning to major in criminal justice, and he chose to go to IWU for its location and flexibility with his schedule as a student-athlete. This year is his first year as an outfielder on the IWU baseball team.

“When I first found out I won the $25,000 scholarship, I was excited,” said Florido. “I’m not working at the moment, so it offers some relief to my family knowing this grant can help pay for some of my college expenses.”

Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU) College Grant Sweepstakes took place last September as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Through their partnership with Univision, BBU hopes that this sweepstakes would ignite a conversation on the importance of supporting Hispanic students as the percentage of Hispanics that attend higher education lags, and they face a lack of financial resources.
