Iowa Wesleyan University has been celebrating Black History Month on campus during the month of February.
To continue the celebration, there will be a public storytelling event titled “Stories of Unknown Civil Rights Activists”. The event will be hosted in the Social Hall of the Howe Activity Center on Wednesday, Feb. 23 beginning at 7 p.m. Students, faculty and staff will share stories about lesser-known Civil Rights events and individuals during this event. A reception with drinks and hors d’oeuvres preceding the event will start at 6 p.m.
LaShawnda Roberts, class of 2019, Senior Financial Aid Counselor for Iowa Wesleyan, along with a planning committee, has organized each event that was held during the month of February.
“My goal in helping with arranging and planning these events for the students is not only to show our Black students that they are important, but that I have walked in their shoes as a Black alumni,” said Roberts. “I also believe this is important to show them that Iowa Wesleyan has faculty and staff that want to hear what they have to say as well as celebrate their achievements and the achievements and progress of Black figures and movements throughout history.”
