MT. PLEASANT - The Henry County Board of Supervisors completed the county's 2020 general election canvass on Tuesday morning.
Using the tally tapes produced by each vote counting machine used on Election Day, the board verified the vote totals and ballots cast for each candidate.
Overall, 10,043 voters, approximately 78 percent of registered voters in Henry County, cast a ballot in the general election. County Auditor Shelly Barber said the turnout was a record for the county.
The county received 6,411 absentee ballots and had five provisional ballots, only two of which were approved, for a total of 6,413 absentee ballots cast in the election. Barber said there were 137 mail-in ballots that were not returned to her office by noon on Monday, the deadline for votes to be included. The ballots would have had to be postmarked by Nov. 2 to count.
Barber added her office had contacted the local post office about any outstanding mail-in ballots and was told there were none that the post office knew of.
In addition to the canvass, the auditors office completed its state mandated election audit on Tuesday afternoon.
