The Iowa Wesleyan College service-learning program was awarded a $1,000 UnitedHealth HEROES Grant from YSA (Youth Service America) and UnitedHealth Group. UnitedHealth HEROES grants support youth-led service-learning initiatives addressing childhood obesity and healthy lifestyles.
Iowa Wesleyan College was one of 282 organizations awarded grants nation-wide. It was awarded the funds to support a joint effort between the REC Center?s new After School program, Healthy U, and its health classes.
Students from two Iowa Wesleyan College classes will complete service-learning projects by working with area youth on health assessments, fitness and nutrition lessons and community gardening.
The Henry County Health Center Foundation has also awarded Iowa Wesleyan funds to support the project. The semester-long initiative culminates on April 22 with Global Youth Service Day, the world?s largest and longest-running youth-led service campaign.
For more information about Iowa Wesleyan?s partnership with Healthy U, contact Dr. Alisha Vincent, Director of Service-Learning, at 319-385-6362.
