FAIRFIELD – JC Huffman Cabinetry in Fairfield is inviting the public to experience a “Ho Ho Ho Wholiday” this Christmas season.
The business has decorated its interior and made its own sets that look straight out of the Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” JC Huffman Cabinetry will have both Santa and the Grinch available to meet and take photos with, as well as a free ornament and free hot chocolate. The business will also sell Grinch-themed plush dolls and “mix ins” for the hot chocolate such as candy bars and hot chocolate bombs. The Mrs. Claus Bakery will have baked goods for sale, too.
The fun begins the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 24, and runs every Friday and Saturday from 5:30-8 p.m. through Dec. 22.
Teresa Huffman, co-founder of JC Huffman Cabinetry and Design Center, said her husband Jim was responsible for making the Whoville sets, which he did with the help of the other employees of JC Huffman. She said they started brainstorming what kind of theme they wanted back in May, and once they decided, they’ve been working nights and weekends ever since June to get ready for opening night on Friday.
“We decided on the Grinch theme as a family,” Teresa said. “We love the Grinch movie, the old one.”
Teresa said that preparing the sets took up a lot of time, almost all of their free time for months. On some Saturdays, the family would be there from 7 a.m. until as late as 9 p.m. at night.
Teresa said that the company that owns the rights to the Grinch story and merchandise, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, has Whoville items for purchase, but all of the sets and their design were created in house, right here in Fairfield. That includes all the walls, windows, doors, chimneys, doghouse for Max, the Grinch’s lair, a Whoville post office and even the residents of Whoville themselves.
“My husband is so creative, that I often joke with him that if we ever retire, we should move to Florida so he can work for Universal Studios in set design,” Theresa said. “Everybody in the family pitches in from the beginning to the end.”
Helping hands came from the couple’s daughter Chasity Duncan and her husband Travis, as well as granddaughters Mareyn and Kinzley.
Teresa said the family took on such an ambitious project because they love putting a smile on a child’s face.
“Seeing kids happy makes it all worthwhile,” she said.
When residents enter the shop, they’ll get a buzzer that will let them know when it’s their turn to get a photo with Santa. While they wait, they can visit the Grinch, Santa’s sleigh, admire the fine carpentry work and all the decorations. The business has machines available where guests can make their own pixie sticks and Nerds sticks.
This will be the second year that JC Huffman Cabinetry has hosted a public Christmas-themed event at its shop. Guests may park at JC Huffman Cabinetry or find parking next door at RPM Automotive, and walk over the foot bridge.
