The Jefferson County Health Center Auxiliary (JCHC Auxiliary) has announced that it has made the “difficult decision” to permanently close the Bargain Box.
“This decision was not taken lightly, and the Auxiliary Board understands that it may come as a disappointment to many loyal customers,” JCHC stated in a news release. “Rising costs and an increase in the building rent made it increasingly difficult for the secondhand store to sustain operations.”
“Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to overcome these hurdles, leading us to the unfortunate conclusion that closing the store is the most viable option,” said Deb Bartholomew, Store Manager. “This was a very difficult decision for the board to make, but in the end, it was necessary.”
The Bargain Box will close on Aug, 31, 2023, and is no longer taking donations. There will be multiple closing sales which will be announced on the JCHC Auxiliary Facebook page.
“We would greatly appreciate your continued business as we are trying to clear the shelves,” Bartholomew said.
The Bargain Box, located at 109 West Broadway Ave. in Fairfield, will be open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday until the end of August.
The Bargain Box has been a part of the community since it first opened on May 12, 1967.
Kathy Gerard, Auxiliary President stated, “We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported us throughout the years. Your loyalty and patronage have been invaluable to our success, and we are truly grateful for you.”
She also expressed gratitude for all the store managers from previous years including Fron Robinson, Helen Davidson, Hilma Biddle, Thelma McNew, Jean Johnson, Wilma Loomis, Marilyn Clark, Helen Lundquist, and the current manager Deb Bartholomew. Deb has managed the Bargain Box for the past 19 years and is looking forward to her retirement. In addition to the managers, countless volunteers have assisted in keeping the Bargain Box running and the board is very thankful for their support.
The JCHC Auxiliary is still very active in operating the JCHC Gift Shop, providing scholarships to students pursuing an education in healthcare related fields, providing education to the community, and supporting the needs of the hospital and its patients.
The Mission of the Jefferson County Health Center Auxiliary is to support the needs of the hospital, the comfort of the patients and their families, and to give scholarships to individuals pursuing a health-related career.
