LOCKRIDGE – A major road improvement project in Jefferson County is now underway, and residents should be mindful of these construction zones to allow more time to get to their destination.
Jefferson County Engineer DeWayne Heintz said this week that work has begun to chip and seal a series of Farm to Market roads totaling 16 miles. The roads are:
- 110th Street from Highway 1 to West Street in Pleasant Plain (5.4 miles)
- Pleasant Plain Road from Fairfield City Limits to 167th Street (3.8 miles)
- Douds Road from H43 to Van Buren County Line (4.6 miles)
- 218th Boulevard from W40 to Henry County Line (1.6 miles)
- Old 34 from Jefferson County line going east of Lockridge (0.8 miles)
The first road being worked on is Old 34 east of Lockridge. Heintz told The Union in 2024 when these road chipping and sealing projects were announced that this section of Old 34 is the original road built in the 1920s. Jefferson County is chipping and sealing its portion of the road at the same time that Henry County is chipping and sealing its portion, which has allowed the two counties to get a better bid by making the project larger.
Heintz said these roads will remain open to the public with a few exceptions, such as 218th Boulevard from Lockridge to the county line, and 110th Street to Pleasant Plain, which will be closed to through traffic but open to local traffic.
“For most of the roads, we’ll have a flagger and pilot car set up,” Heintz said. “Just plan a little extra time for your journey.”
