FAIRFIELD – Jefferson County Conservation hosted a program called “Yaks and Ciders” on Thursday, June 20 at Pleasant Lake in Fairfield.
The name referred to the two fun activities that participants got to do that evening, take a kayak onto the lake, and then receive a coupon for a free cider at Fishback & Stephenson Cider House across the street. Jefferson County Naturalist Austin Roe said this was the second year of Yaks and Ciders. He brought 16 kayaks on a trailer to Pleasant Lake, where participants donned life jackets and spent a peaceful evening on the water.
The event drew people from Fairfield and neighboring towns, and one from as far away as Chicago. Those who missed the event will have another opportunity to get on a kayak for the Pleasant Lake Paddle from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26. There will be more opportunities after that, too, like the Pleasant Lake Paddle from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, and a JCP Paddle from 5-7 p.m. on July 24 at Jefferson County Park.
Other conservation programs on the horizon at Jefferson County Park include Moth Night from 10-11 p.m. and again from 11:15-12:15 a.m. on July 23, which will be led by entomologist Moni Hayne. Summer Nature Olympics will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 30. The event is for kids entering 4th-7th grade, and will include kayaking, archery, spear throwing and fire starting. The conservation office’s final event of the summer will be the Outdoor Adventure Night from 5-8 p.m. on Aug. 6, where the whole family is invited to kayak, canoe, hike, fish and do archery.
