Jefferson County Sheriff Gregg Morton confirmed this morning that the mailings pertaining to the Iowa State Sheriff?s and Deputies Association Institute are genuine and not a scam.
Morton said he has received many phone calls from residents who are curious about the mailing, which solicits funds for the institute.
?If folks are receiving this with my signature, it is legitimate and is a spring mailing from the association,? he said. ?Every member of the Jefferson County Sheriff?s Office is a member of the association and the money collected does benefit our local Sheriff?s Office.?
Some of the funds raised for the association go toward sending a child to the YMCA summer camp, scholarships, drug awareness and other programs.
?This is not a sales pitch on my part, just a clarification that as long as it has my signature and goes to the ISSDA at P.O. Box 526 Atlantic, IA, it is legitimate,? he said. ?The ISSDA does not participate in phone solicitations.?
