FAIRFIELD - The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors discussed the future of the county weed commissioner role during its meeting Monday morning.
Current weed commissioner Dan Miller has announced he no longer wants the role. Miller is also the county environmental health director, and he has indicated that he does not have time for the weed commissioner role after reducing his hours to 30 per week.
The supervisors discussed the prospect of having the duties done by Regional Utility Services Systems (RUSS), which contracts with the county already in nuisance enforcement. RUSS has offered to perform the duties of weed commissioner for $3,500 a year, $500 more than what the county was paying Miller to perform the task. Miller has suggested that the role could be taken on by the county's Secondary Roads Department, though county engineer Scott Cline said he does not think such a move is wise because of a lack of manpower or if that arrangement is allowed by state law.
