WASHINGTON — Jersey Mike’s Sub on East Jefferson Street held a ribbon-cutting for its grand opening Friday morning, five months after beginning business in town.
Owner Kevin Schultz said he was glad to have the celebration underway.
“We wanted to wait until things slowed down a little bit,” he said. “We’ve been so busy with other things. I kept saying, ‘We need to do this,’ but people kept saying we had this coming up and that coming up, and finally I just said, ‘We need to get this done.’”
The sandwich shop wrote a check to the Betterment Foundation at the event. Schultz said donations like this one were a tradition for the franchise every March.
“In that first month that we were open, there was a special way that customers could donate,” he said. “On the last day of the month, which is called the Day of Giving, all our proceeds went to the charity.”
While the amount initially came out around $5,600, Schultz said he wrote an additional check to get it the rest of the way to $6,000.
Betterment Foundation President Roxanne Bush said the organization was grateful for the donation.
“We’re very fortunate to have Jersey Mike’s in the community and very fortunate for their generosity,” she said. “And because of their support and the support of our community, Betterment is able to continue bettering Washington.”
