Name: Joshua Schreiber
Residence: Rural Washington. 2650 Sockum Ridge Road, Washington, Iowa 52353
Party on Ballot: No Party
Family: Married 13½ years; two boys, Joseph, 12, and Jayden, 9. My wife is a registered nurse at the U of I Hospital in labor and delivery and at the Midwife Outreach Clinic in Washington. Both boys are active in youth sports and activities.
Occupation: Currently a self-employed contractor (seven years). Previously, warehousing and distribution at Tyson Foods for 13 years.
' What experience/traits do you have that you believe makes you the best candidate?
Currently as a self-employed contractor, I have developed positive relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and clients based on my ability to interpret their wants and needs in relation to costs.
Before my work as a contractor, I spent many years in leadership roles.
In addition to supervisory duties I was tasked with analyzing data between inventories, sales orders, production schedules and transportation availability for any conflict or discrepancies and communicated these findings daily to necessary personnel in sales, scheduling and transportation teams at a local and corporate level.
I was able to be creative in my role developing procedures in the departments I oversaw to maximize efficiencies. This success allowed me to be consistently recognized as a role model in my field.
I enjoy spending time with family, camping, fishing, hunting and volunteer work to include coaching various youth sports.
I believe raising a family, along with my leadership skills, work ethic, attention to detail, communication and forward thinking that make me an excellent candidate for the Washington County Board of Supervisors.
' Why are you running for office?
I have had an interest in county government and would like to be a part of the solution.
With the opening currently in my district, I feel now is the right time for me to bring a new perspective and new ideas to the Board of Supervisors to ensure the success of the county now and for the future.
What are your priorities if elected?
I would like to bring awareness, information and involvement from the district and within the county.
The diversity of the area is ever growing, creating an abundance of differing opinions. We have to continue communicating to work together and ultimately do what is best for the county.
' What do you see as the top issues facing the county, both in the short term and long term?
Currently, I believe public health involving the pandemic is our largest short-term issue that must be resolved to prevent it becoming long-term. It is trending in the right direction, but we still must ensure those most 'at risk” that are interested in receiving the vaccine are able to do so.
We must follow the guidelines set out by the CDC and not alleviate from those as there is a limited availability for the vaccine, and we have a responsibility to protect those most vulnerable.
It is important we have a mutual respect for each other and continue to educate for mitigation purposes while at the same time respecting the liberties we have as a free people.
As a county government, it is vital we are always looking ahead on planning and budgeting expenses as to avoid any sudden costs whenever possible to maintain our fiscal responsibility.
We must look for economic growth while keeping the balance between rural and urban lifestyles to increase revenues. Increasing taxes must be our last resort.
