FAIRFIELD – Josie Hannes has opened a new business at her property on East Broadway Avenue in Fairfield.
Hannes opened the shop “Foxy Curations” inside her photography studio Josie Hannes Design Photography at 113 E. Broadway Ave. It’s a new venture for Hannes, who previously ran a consignment shop years ago. She loves everything vintage, and the theme of her new shop is marrying old and new styles so they come together seamlessly.
“I feel like the way things used to be made was so much better than they are today,” she said. “I'm obsessed with decor, and there are so many trends that come and go so quickly, and vintage is always in style.”
Foxy Curations’ opening night coincided with the December First Fridays Art Walk on Dec. 5. It was the culmination of months of planning that began last summer when Hannes was asked to provide decorating and design guidance on a few homes.
“They said, ‘We love your style’ and I was able to do whatever, to have at it,” she said. “That reignited this spark to do this for more than just myself, and that got me thinking about opening a store again. I like things that are different and quirky, mixing traditional with fun, and that’s what I want this store to be about.”
During her visit in 2012, Oprah Winfrey dubbed Fairfield “America’s most unusual town,” and Hannes said her store reflects that, too, pointing to a neon sign inside that reads “Stay Weird.”
“Our town is very artsy and creative, and I know there are a lot of like-minded people who will enjoy this type of thing,” she said. “Plus, vintage to me is always a win because it keeps things out of the landfill.”
Hannes has lots of interesting and funny items for home décor. She likes helping customers find a piece that reveals their personality.
“I love going into a house that has been thoughtfully curated, where you can tell somebody has hunted to put all the pieces together in a creative way,” she said.
Hannes said the response from the public has been “overwhelming,”
“It’s been fun getting to know customers and already in a short span of time having repeat customers,” she said.
Hannes chose the name “Foxy Curations” because “foxy” is an old-school word that means “nice looking,” and “curations” because of how she matches old and new styles.
“I don’t want this to feel like a normal store,” she said. “I want it to be different.”
Hannes will have a section of her store set aside for “Foxy Contributors” to sell their own merchandise. In February, she’ll have her first contributor, Angela Winter, who will have her own nook called “Another Chapter” to sell new and used books.
Foxy Curations is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
