KALONA — The annual town festival in Kalona is back this weekend, with a few new features including a pickleball tournament, a cookie-baking contest, and use of a newly installed playground at the city park.
Kalona Chamber of Commerce Director Tonia Poole said the festivities would add to the already popular yearly event June 16 and 17, and would be kept “as free as possible” across the board.
“One of the things I love most about Kalona Days is the team effort of the community,” she said. “It gets the different clubs involved, it gets so many different community members involved to make it happen, and the activities are for all ages … it’s just a good, wholesome, good time no matter your age or where you live.”
There are still entry fees for the Fun Run this year. Poole said proceeds would go to support research on Invasive lobular carcinoma, or ILC, a rare type of breast cancer.
“That’s almost doubled our fun run registrations already, people are eager to jump on board for that,” she said. “A community member was diagnosed with this, and she’s been trying to help bring awareness … we were supporting her in that mission.”
