KALONA — It’s nearly the last weekend of September, and that means the Kalona Fall Festival is about to return. The decades-long tradition promises to bring apple fritters, historical insight and activities to the town in northern Washington County.
Kalona Historical Village Director Nancy Roth said this year’s festivities would feature the usual attractions, while spotlighting major upgrades at the train depot, like a deck built around the building, a donated train signal, and a massive rail car the village hopes to convert into new museum space soon.
“We have lots and lots of great vendors, demonstrators, and of course, the favorite thing for everybody when they come is all of the wonderful foods,” Roth said. “We brought in a rail car, and the rail car is sitting on a set of tracks now, behind the depot … we’re contributing to the train story of our area, how it made us grow.”
This year also represents the 50th anniversary of the festival’s apple fritter tent, although Fall Fest itself is 52.
Wrist bands for the fall festival are $8 for adults, and grant entry from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.
