DAVENPORT ? A Kalona man was sentenced to nearly three years? imprisonment for falsifying his tax returns over four years. James Lavon Miller, 62, will serve 33 months for falsely claiming a total of over $6 million in refunds on his tax returns. The false tax returns were filed in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. United States District Judge John A. Jarvey also sentenced Miller to three years? supervised release.
Miller filed five false returns claiming tax refunds in amounts ranging from approximately $130,000 to over $5 million. He supported his claims by listing fabricated interest payments. However, no refunds were actually paid on the claims. According to a press release from U.S. attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt, the Internal Revenue Service made numerous requests for information about Miller?s income and tax liability, but Miller refused to comply.
The IRS?s Criminal Investigation unit was responsible for investigating the case. The United States Attorney?s Office for the Southern District of Iowa prosecuted the case.
