Kelly Smith was elected as a new member of the Washington Community School Board in 2019. The Union asked her a series of questions about her background and goals as a way to introduce her to the community. The questions will appear in bold.
Can you tell us about your background and your family?
My husband, Jeremy and I, have been married for 22 years. We moved to Washington 16 years ago from Columbus Junction where I graduated. We have three kids: Dylan, Gavin, and Emerson.
What sort of activities are you involved in?
This is the first community elected position I have held, but since moving to Washington, I have been involved with several parent teacher boards contributing my time. I have served as board member on Kingdom Kids preschool board, Vice President of Stewart Boosters, Vice President of Lincoln PTG, secretary of the Washington PTO, and secretary of the Music Boosters. I served as homeroom parent every year my kids were at Stewart and Lincoln. I really enjoyed being a part of parent teacher groups that can help make a difference. We worked alongside teachers to make each school a safe and fun place to learn and grow.
Three years ago, I started a part time job as the secretary for the Immanuel Lutheran Church here in Washington. During our free time we enjoy bike riding, hanging out with family, going to movies, and out to eat.
What motivated you to run for office?
I have always been eager to help with several events around the schools, such as Stewart Walk-A- Thon and Lincoln Bike-A-Thon, and my sights were on a board seat as a 5-year-plan. After being asked to run, I realized now is a good time while my kids are still in school. I ran for school board because I would like to help continue to make Washington Schools a safe and enjoyable place for teachers and students to learn and grow.
Since learning of your election in November, how have you been preparing for your new role?
As for preparing myself to be on a school board, I receive weekly newsletter articles from Iowa Association of School Boards. They are an incredible source for information. I feel acclimated with school information since I have been in and around classrooms for over 13 years.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term on the school board?
I plan to serve and advocate for the educational needs of our students and teachers.
Looking ahead, I feel that Washington School Districts will continue to make the most of what we receive, learn about ways to help the school district with funding, and find ways to help our teachers.
Go, Demons!
