Kicking off the 2022 legislative session
State Rep. Joe Mitchell
Jan. 18, 2022 10:19 am
I am excited to continue working for the people of Iowa District 84 in the 2022 Legislative Session! While this week has been filled with pomp and circumstance, next week is when the real work begins.
My legislative focus this session will primarily be on workforce issues, reducing tax burdens for working-class Iowans, providing adequate funding for schools, and ensuring parents have the choice of where to send their children to school.
I’m extremely passionate about these issues and I look forward to hearing from members of the community. The needs and priorities of the people of District 84 are always on my mind. Please feel free to contact me about any issues, concerns, or to just leave a note! I truly enjoy talking with you all!
Condition of the State
Earlier this week we heard from Kim Reynolds as she gave her annual Condition of the State Address. In her speech, she reiterated our past accomplishments including; reducing tax burdens for Iowans, reforming unemployment systems, promoting workforce participation for all Iowans, and a number of other key victories for the people of Iowa.
A part of Gov. Reynold’s speech that excited me was her introduction of a comprehensive tax cut bill. One of the main points of this bill is a 4% flat income tax rate for all Iowans. This tax cut bill also will help Iowans who have worked their whole lives by eliminating retirement taxes on 401(k), IRA, and pension accounts. I’m looking forward to working with the governor on this issue, ensuring economic freedoms and expanding the workforce participation for all Iowans — especially those in the 84th District.
As Gov. Reynolds said, “We’re strong because we’ve been guided by the lights of common sense, fairness, and freedom. By the knowledge that bold action isn’t always government action. It’s Iowans making their own decisions for their own families and future.”
Getting to Work
Committee work begins next week, meaning that I’m going to hit the ground running. I’ve already had multiple bills assigned to me, which presents an exciting opportunity to advocate for Southeast Iowans.
Last week, I had the opportunity to meet with constituents from the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce to talk about my priorities for this session.
We talked about expanding the workforce, reducing the tax burden, and many other items that I will be focusing on this session.
Serving the people of Southeast Iowa means prioritizing the issues that affect Southeast Iowans, so I look forward to meeting with constituents all around the district throughout these next few months.
Moving Forward
It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve the people of Southeast Iowa at the state legislature, and I am incredibly excited to announce my campaign for re-election. As your representative, I will fight for good jobs, great schools, and more freedom!
My home district may look a bit different after the redistricting process, but my passion for defending the freedoms of Southeast Iowans will never change. I am running to represent the area where I was born and raised: District 87, which includes parts of Jefferson County (including Fairfield), Van Buren County, and my home of Henry County (including Mount Pleasant).
God bless!
State Rep. Joe Mitchell, R-Mt. Pleasant
