Aaron McGlynn, ACE Instructor at Kirkwood Washington Regional, has consistently ensured that his college credit in high school students receive an expanded educational experience through sharing his professional experiences, field trips, guest speakers, and internship opportunities.
He is an industry leader that prioritizes training up the next generation of builders, an important priority in an industry where there is a national shortage of workers of at least 740,000.
In addition to his instruction at Washington Regional, McGlynn has displayed his vision for the future by being on Kirkwood Community College's Industry Advisory Board and an active leader in the local, state, and national Home Builders Associations.
In February McGlynn's efforts were recognized at the National Association of Home Builders International Builders Show in Orlando, Florida. He was recognized as the Outstanding Industry Advisory Board Member for his exceptional work on Kirkwood's Industry Advisory Board.
Joe Greathouse, Kirkwood's Professor of Construction Technology nominated McGlynn for the award for making a major impact on students now and in the future.
"Aaron is an amazing teacher and a tremendous asset to our students, faculty, and programs at Kirkwood Community College. We are so fortunate to have Aaron on our team,” Greathouse said.
Tera Pickens, Washington Regional Director agreed, saying, "Aaron is truly one-of-a-kind in the classroom and very deserving of this award. Our ACE academy students are fortunate to be able to learn from Aaron and his extensive industry knowledge and training. In addition to teaching students valuable industry skills he also teaches them the value of hard work, the importance of a team, respect and commitment."
Kirkwood students from main campus were also award winners at the International Builders Show.
The college's student team won first place for the Associate Program Student Competition.
The award was based on a team project where classroom skills were used to complete a management project proposal for a real company.
The team, comprised of students and led by faculty members, completed a set of working drawings, a detailed cost estimate, and a complete construction schedule for a fourplex plan. In addition, the team determined the overhead and percentage rate to determine the overall profit.
The documents were then presented to a panel of judges at the International Builders Show as part of the competition. This is the second first-place finish in the last three years for the college.
