Pancakes and Saturday?s Fairfield Kiwanis Kids? Day parade go hand-in-hand.
The Kiwanis Club event organizers usually plan for about 2,100 pancake breakfast servings.
Who oversees the task of Kids? Day food preparation?
?I?m afraid that would be me,? said Kiwanis member Dick Bogner this morning.
Bogner usually gets to the white and yellow-striped tent on the east side of the square at 4:30 a.m. on the day of the parade. Pancake breakfasts are served from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
?By 5:30 a.m. there?s usually a few people lining up and waiting to eat,? said Bogner.
The mixing of 18 batches of pancake batter happens later today at the Fairfield Middle School kitchen.
Bogner readily shares his recipe and ingredients. Each batch has 6.5 gallons of buttermilk, 60 eggs, 1.5 pounds of butter, 15 pounds of flour and a bag of dry ingredients including sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
The total amounts of ingredients for the 18 batches of batter are impressive: 117 gallons of buttermilk, 1,080 eggs, 27 pounds of butter, 270 pounds of flour and 18 bags of dry ingredients.
Other items on the menu are orange drink, milk and sausages.
?I?m not sure of the weight, but there are 18 boxes of sausages,? said Bogner with the numbers flowing without hesitation.
The price for the breakfast Saturday will be $6 per adult and $3 per child. Advance tickets at discounted prices have been available for weeks prior to the event. The proceeds support community youth and senior citizen activities underwritten by Fairfield Kiwanis. The organization has distributed more than $230,000 for various projects during its 36-year history.
The parade, which started in 1968, will step off at 10 a.m. from the Fairfield High School parking lot following 9:30 a.m. judging.
