WASHINGTON — The Washington Noon Kiwanis club donated $7,600 at its annual giveback meeting on Wednesday, all funded by the group’s shifts at a concession stand during the Washington County Fair.
The donations were split between several groups, with each Kiwanian picking a recipient of $50 per shift worked at the stand.
Club President Jenny Morgan said the day was one of her favorite traditions.
“I’m so proud to be a Kiwanian,” she said. “It’s great to give all this money away, and tell all these people we thank them for all their hard work, and we can spread the awareness and happiness of making our county the best county around.”
Recipients of the money said they were grateful for the boost.
The Washington Music Boosters walked away with $1,000 for their general fund. Organization Vice President Diana Flannery said it would help send students on trips, buy new instruments and afford music camps.
“There are so many needs that come up, and $1,000 goes a long way,” she said. “But it also sends a message that the people of Kiwanis believe in our youth, and our music program, and they believe in our community. So that means a lot.”
The Washington County YMCA received $950, as well as a personal donation of $500 from one Kiwanian.
Y CEO Amy Schulte said that money would all go to its indoor pool project, under construction just outside the building where Kiwanians met for lunch on Wednesday.
“That’s our primary project right now, we’re really focusing on finishing that up,” she said. “It’s always great to have all the service clubs in our community and all the support that we’ve had. The Kiwanis club puts in a lot of work at the county fair to raise these funds, and to have so many of their club members donate their money to our Y, shows what good partnerships and collaboration can bring about.”
The Washington Public Library received $500 for a teen mindfulness program established in honor of Jaicey Miller, a former library page.
Librarian Jenisa Harris the contribution hit close to home.
“I was surprised and honored that they recognized it,” she said. “It just really feels good to keep doing this class. I would have continued it anyway, but that someone is willing to keep her memory alive is awesome.”
