FAIRFIELD – Fairfield is about to experience its busiest weekend of the year, with one event after another Friday through Sunday.
The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce will get things started with the Barnyard Bash from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Maasdam Barns. The next day, the barns will host another event called Escaramuza Quetzalli from 2-5 p.m., where the public can see a live demonstration of Mexican horsemanship from a team of female riders.
One of the most anticipated events of the year is Kiwanis Kids’ Day, and that is Saturday, Sept. 20. Fairfield Kiwanis will serve pancakes from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its big tent on Court Street. Tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the door, and that includes pancakes, sausage, and a choice of juice, milk and coffee. Children under 12 are half price. Tickets can be purchased from any Kiwanis member.
The main attraction is the Kids’ Day Parade, which starts at 10 a.m. from Fairfield High School. This year’s theme is “Adventures Await.” Stick around for the bouncy houses, climbing wall, pony rides, face painting, and possibly a petting zoo.
As if that were not enough, there’s more fun to be had on Sunday for the Collector Cars Unlimited Car Show. The car show is now over 40 years old, and averages 115-125 entries for its September show. Cars will begin gathering in the square at 8 a.m. that day, with 25 trophies in all handed out between 3-4 p.m. The club asks residents not to park on the inside or outside ring of parking stalls so these spots can be reserved for entries in the car show.
It will be a busy weekend for Daryn Hamilton because he’s not only a member of Fairfield Kiwanis and one of the organizers for Kids Day, but he’s also the organizer for the car show the following day. He said he’s hoping for a good crowd at both events, and that Kids Day has been getting an average of 1,600 to 1,800 people through its pancake tent in recent years.
“We just want people to come out and have a safe, fun time,” Hamilton said.
