Rep. Jarad Klein (R-Keota) has turned in the necessary signatures to become an official candidate for Iowa House District 78.
Klein announced his intentions in early November, following the announced retirement of state Rep. Betty DeBoef. After redistricting, this newly formed district is comprised of Keokuk County and most of Washington County.
Klein was born and raised in Keota, where he is a fifth generation family farmer. Klein is a 1999 Keota High School graduate who went on to attend Drake University before returning to Keota to farm with his family.
Klein also is active in St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Washington County Pork Producers, Washington County Farm Bureau, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association and Washington County Republicans. Klein also is a past chairman of the Keokuk County Republican Central Committee.
Klein is serving his first term in the House.
?For too long, a conservative perspective has been lacking in state government. These past two years I have been working to eliminate excessive spending, instill commonsense budgeting practices and protect Iowa taxpayers,? said Klein. ?I?m proud of the work that?s been completed, but there?s still more to do. I am humbled to have the opportunity to do the work of Iowans.?
Klein currently serves as vice chairman of the House Labor Committee. Additionally, he serves on the House environmental protection, local government and public safety committees.
He and his wife Rachel have two young children and reside north of Keota on the family?s farm.
