A report from the Iowa Legislative Services Agency last week said Washington County had the ninth lowest average annual wages in the state, at $41,240. Henry and Jefferson counties came in closer to the top, at the 24th ($48,513) and 25th ($48,333) highest amounts, respectively.
A recent report from the Iowa Legislative Services Agency found a disparity between average annual wages in Southeast Iowa counties.
The report said Washington County had the ninth lowest average in the state, at $41,240. Henry and Jefferson counties came in closer to the top, at the 24th ($48,513) and 25th ($48,333) highest amounts, respectively.
The geographic wage gap may be difficult to explain. The three neighbors — Jefferson, Henry and Washington counties — have similar populations and population density according to 2020 census data. While differences may be due to economic variations like cost of living, county-specific, accurate data on those more complex numbers is harder to come by.
