FAIRFIELD — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fairfield hopes to start a new Christmas tradition in town by inviting the public to show off their Nativity displays.
The church, located at 2143 S. 32nd St. on the west edge of town, will host a communitywide Nativity scene display from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.
“Walk through the displays, listen to Christmas hymns and feel the true spirit of Christmas,” states a flyer from the church.
For those with a Nativity display they’d like to show, the church is asking residents to set it up between 5-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.
Lisa Trent, a member of the church who is helping to organize the event, said she expects this first year of Nativity displays to be small, but she hopes that it grows as more people become aware of it.
“We’ll get to hear some musical numbers by people who have volunteered to sing,” Trent said. “We’ll also have donuts and cider.”
Trent said the church has a seven-minute video of a Nativity that it will play on a loop.
“We’re excited to start this tradition, because I don’t think anybody else has done this,” Trent said.
This Nativity scene in Fairfield’s Central Park is among the most high-profile in town. Residents who would like to show off their own Nativity displays are invited to bring them to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fairfield from 5-7 p.m. Friday, so they can be displayed to the public from 3-7 p.m. Saturday. The church hopes to make this collection of Nativity displays an annual tradition. (Andy Hallman/The Union)
